Wellness App Review: Nike Training Club

Always wanted a personal trainer, but thought it might be too expensive? The free Nike Training Club app provides users with a virtual personal trainer and over 100 full body workouts inspired by top athletes like Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams. This app can help you track your workouts, stay motivated, and reach your personal fitness goals.

How it works
Nike Training Club is available as a free download on iTunes and Google Play.  If you already use the Nike+ running app, you can integrate it with Nike Training Club for a comprehensive workout that includes cardio and strength training.

The first step to get started is to select your fitness goal.  There are four options: get lean, get toned, get strong, and get focused.  Then, you can select your level: beginner, intermediate, or advanced.  For each level, there are many different workout options.  Once you select your workout, you can customize it by selecting certain exercises. When you are ready to begin, you simply click a button to start your workout.  The app will talk to you and tell you when to do each exercise. For each exercise, you can view a step-by-step description of how to do the exercise with photos and videos. In addition to individual workouts, you can also do a structured 4-week workout program.

Pros: The app has a large selection of workout options tailored to the specific fitness goal you chose, and includes clear steps and visuals on how to do each exercise.  The app provides helpful tips throughout the workout to ensure that you are following proper form. At the end of each workout you can set a reminder for the next workout, helping you stay consistent with your exercise routine.

Cons: Other reviewers have mentioned that the app occasionally freezes and requires them to start the workout over from the beginning to get credit for completion. Also, while the workout videos are extremely helpful, it would be beneficial if they had an audio component.  One final note: although men can use this app, it was specifically designed for women and only features women athletes.

Overall consensus: This app has a great library of workout ideas, provides several motivational tools, and keeps things fresh by adding new exercise content and options. This app is definitely a great tool to help you reach your fitness goals!
