Neurodivergence: Embrace differences and offer support

Neurodivergence means that some people’s brains work in ways that are different from the “typical” way. This includes conditions like autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and more, but it’s not just limited to these. These conditions are often invisible, meaning people may not typically show outward signs of being neurodivergent. Neurodivergence is simply a natural part of human diversity.

What to know

  • Different doesn’t mean less. People with neurodivergent traits bring fresh perspectives and valuable skills to the table.
  • Everyone deserves understanding. When we create supportive environments, everyone can thrive, regardless of how their brain works.
  • Differences benefit us all. Embracing neurodiversity helps us build communities where everyone feels valued.

How to offer support

  • Educate yourself about neurodivergence. Take time to understand the different ways people think, learn, and engage.
  • Be patient and understanding. Support the different ways people approach tasks and problems.
  • Embrace people for who they are. Their unique strengths are not problems to be solved, so don’t try to “fix” someone.
  • Create inclusive spaces. Make sure places like home, work, and school are welcoming and accessible for everyone, including those with sensory sensitivities.
  • Support accessibility by backing policies that make spaces, workplaces, and schools better for neurodivergent individuals.
  • Encourage self-advocacy. Help neurodivergent individuals feel confident in speaking up about their needs and asking for help when needed.

Remember…

  • Neurodivergence is natural.
  • Respect and acceptance are essential.
  • Kindness goes a long way.
