Safe, budget-friendly summer activities

We are at the height of summer, enjoying sunshine, warm weather and hopefully time with friends and family. However, with the challenges of last year, it can be helpful to find inexpensive opportunities to maximize the season without busting your budget. Plus, while many areas are lifting restrictions related to COVID-19, it is still important to be vigilant and do your part to keep everyone healthy. Check out these ideas to enjoy some safe, low-cost summer fun!

Plan a staycation. Take the time to purposefully unwind and spend time in your home and community. Click here for ideas!

Cook an exotic meal. Where is your dream destination vacation? Find a recipe from the place you’d like to travel to most and make it. Feeling extra ambitious? Prepare a three-course meal from the locale!

Get outside. Soak up as much sunshine as possible (safely, of course!). Whether it’s enjoying a cup of coffee on the front porch, a BBQ or picnic with friends, or hiking and camping at a nearby state park, take advantage of the warm weather and extra hours of light before you miss out!

Eat local. Enjoying fresh fruit and vegetables from your backyard garden or farmer’s market is one of the joys of summertime eating.

Disconnect. One of the benefits of vacation is the ability to unplug. Even if you are at or close to home, turn off phone notifications and take your time responding to non-crucial texts, phone calls and emails. Perhaps visit your local library for a new book and spend some time reading outside.

Spend time with loved ones. Host a family game night or invite friends over to enjoy those new recipes you’re cooking up. After so much isolation this past year, socializing in safe ways can be very beneficial for your mental well-being.

Create a summer playlist. Select music that helps you get into vacation mode. Play it frequently to keep up the relaxing vibes.

Do nothing! And by that, we mean take time to RELAX. It can be one of the hardest challenges to clear your mind. Instead, spend time in a hammock or chair outside and let your mind wander while enjoying the warm summer evenings.
