Wellness App Review: MapMyRun

Tired of running the same outdoor route? With MapMyRun, you can get quick access to running routes in cities all around the world.  Countless running apps provide insight on speed, distance, and time. MapMyRun does all of that, plus plots out your runs on a map so you can keep track of your personal running routes and your progress.

How it works 

You can download the app for free using your iPhone, Android, or Blackberry phone. The app uses your phone’s built-in GPS to track your outdoor fitness activities, like running, walking, hiking, and cycling. To start tracking your workout, all you need to do is log in and click to start your workout. For each workout, you can view a summary of the duration, distance, speed, pace, elevation, and calories burned.

The coolest aspect of the app is that you can see where you’re heading and where you’ve been on a map using the interactive route-tracking tool. You can easily share your workouts with friends through Facebook, Twitter, and email.

In addition to tracking your workouts, you can also log your food, weight, and water consumption on the app. MapMyRun also has a free website that offers all the features that are on the app. You can view your workout history on the website or app at any time.

Pros: If you’re traveling, MapMyRun can be a really handy tool, since it allows you to search for routes other members have created for different cities. And when you’re running locally at home, this feature can also be helpful if you want to see some new scenery and switch up your route. You can also create your own routes and save them for future runs. If you enjoy listening to music while you run, you can use the built-in playlist feature or run a music app like Spotify in the background. The app is built as an open platform, allowing you to connect an endless number of devices and apps such as MyFitnessPal, Fitbit, Jawbone, Polar, and more.

Cons:While basic functionality like run tracking is straightforward, there is a lot packed into the app; this can sometimes make it hard to use all of the features. The app allows you to compete against others who do the same local courses, earn achievements for having the fastest time on the course, and earn badges for reaching personal records, but these features were difficult to navigate on the app and website.

Overall consensus: The main benefit of this app is its mapping functionality, so if you’re looking for new and exciting routes or to track your own personal routes, MapMyRun would be a great option to consider.
