Simple ways to stay active this summer

Summer naturally creates more opportunities to move. Longer days, warmer weather, and time spent outdoors make it easier to be active without overthinking it or sticking to a strict routine. Instead of focusing on structured workouts, think about how movement can fit into your day in ways that feel natural. Here are a few simple ways to approach it.

Take advantage of being outside

One of the easiest ways to stay active in the summer is simply spending more time outdoors. Movement that might feel routine—like walking or biking—often feels more enjoyable outside. A change of scenery can turn something simple into a refreshing part of your day. Let your environment guide you:

  • Walk through your neighborhood or explore a local trail
  • Ride your bike or spend time at a park
  • Move around your yard, play with your kids, or toss a ball

Sometimes just being outside is enough to get you moving. Even short periods of movement can make a difference in how you feel over time.

Use water to your advantage

When the heat makes traditional workouts feel draining, water can offer an easier, more enjoyable way to stay active. Swimming is a great full-body option, but it’s far from the only way to move in the water. Summer naturally brings in more playful, relaxed ways to stay active. You could:

  • Swim casually or walk through the pool
  • Run through sprinklers or play with a hose in the yard
  • Spend time at the beach or lake—walking, wading, or playing games
  • Try paddleboarding, floating, or just moving around in the water

These moments might not feel like exercise, and that’s the point. Water makes movement feel lighter, cooler, and often more fun—especially on the hottest days.

Make it social

Staying active doesn’t have to be something you plan out or do on your own. In the summer, it often happens naturally when you’re spending time with other people. Instead of setting aside time to work out, let movement be part of what you’re already doing. Some simple ways to do this:

  • Meet a friend for a walk
  • Play a casual game like pickleball or catch
  • Go for a bike ride with family

It keeps things simple and relaxed—and often makes it easier to stay active without overthinking it. That same idea can apply to time spent with your pets, too.

Stay active with your pets
Summer creates more opportunities to get outside—and for pets, that often means more chances to move, explore, and burn off energy. If you have a pet, especially a dog, they can be a natural way to stay active throughout the day. Their need for regular movement and fresh air can help you stay consistent without much planning. Some simple ways to include them:

• Take your dog for a walk in the early morning or evening when temperatures are cooler
• Spend time playing in the yard—fetch, tug, or just moving or running around together
• Visit a park or open space where your pet can explore
• Use quick outdoor breaks for short walks or play sessions

Just keep the heat in mind. Hot pavement and high temperatures can be tough on pets, so aim for cooler parts of the day, bring water, and watch for signs they need a break.

Adjust to the weather, not against it

Summer weather isn’t always predictable. Some days bring intense heat, others bring humidity or sudden rain—and all of that can affect how you feel about being active. Instead of pushing through it, adjust your approach. That might include:

  • Heading outside earlier in the morning or later in the evening to avoid peak heat
  • Keeping things lighter and taking more breaks on especially hot or humid days
  • Using rainy days as a chance to move indoors with a short workout or stretching session

Staying active doesn’t have to look the same every day. It can shift with the weather and still feel consistent.

Look for natural opportunities to move

One of the best parts of summer is that opportunities to move tend to show up more often—simply because you’re out and about more. Instead of planning extra time for activity, notice what’s already there. Think about:

  • Taking a short walk while enjoying the longer daylight hours
  • Spending a few extra minutes outside between tasks
  • Staying on your feet a bit more when the weather’s nice

Summer creates small openings for movement throughout the day. Taking advantage of those moments can be an easy way to stay active without changing your routine too much.

Stay active while traveling

Summer trips don’t always look like your normal routine—and that’s part of what makes them enjoyable. Staying active during travel doesn’t need to be structured or planned out.

Travel days often include more movement than you realize—walking through airports, exploring new places, carrying bags, or simply being on your feet more than usual. You can also make the most of what your trip already includes:

  • At the beach, swim, walk along the shore, or play in the water
  • In the mountains or near lakes, hike, explore, or spend time outdoors
  • In a city, walk between places, visit parks, or take the stairs when you can

If you want a little more structure, keep it simple. A short walk, a quick stretch, or a few simple movements like squats in your room can help you feel more balanced—without taking away from your trip.

Some days will be more active than others, and that’s completely fine. Travel is a change of pace, and movement can be part of it without being the focus.

Let your routine evolve with the season

Summer doesn’t require a perfect routine or a set plan. It’s a chance to move more when you can, try different activities, and take advantage of what the season offers.

If you’re already active, this can be a time to mix things up. If you’re getting started, even small amounts of movement throughout the day can make a difference. The goal is simply to keep moving in ways that feel manageable and fit into your day.

As you stay active, remember to take care of yourself—stay hydrated, be mindful of the heat, and don’t forget to keep your pets safe too.
