Breast health: Know your “normal”

Breast health is something worth paying attention to at every stage of life. Because your breasts naturally change over time, knowing what is typical for you can make it easier to recognize when something feels different. Staying aware of changes and keeping up with recommended screenings can help you take a more active role in your health.

Changes that can be normal

Breasts naturally change over time. Hormones, aging, pregnancy, weight changes, and your monthly cycle can all affect how they look and feel.

You might notice that your breasts:

  • Feel different from each other, including being slightly different in size or shape
  • Feel fuller or more tender at certain times of the month
  • Have areas that feel firmer, softer, or slightly different in texture

Changes to pay attention to

Any new or unusual change that persists should be checked.

Talk with a doctor if you notice:

  • A new lump or firm area
  • A change in the size or shape of your breast
  • Dimpling or puckering of the skin
  • Nipple discharge, especially if it’s bloody
  • A nipple that suddenly turns inward
  • Redness, warmth, swelling, or pain that doesn’t go away
