Balancing fitness and festivities

The holidays bring joy, connection, and, let’s be honest, a lot of busyness. Between family gatherings, travel, and endless to-do lists, it’s easy for healthy habits to slip. The key isn’t perfection—it’s balance.

Luckily, you don’t have to choose between fitness and fun. With a little creativity, you can enjoy the season and still feel strong and energized. Here are some tips to get you started.

Rethink what fitness means
Exercise doesn’t have to be long or happen at the gym. Short bursts of movement work too. The goal is to keep moving, not to be perfect.

  • Do ten-minute bursts of activity. Try squats, push-ups, stretches, or planks for just 5–10 minutes.
  • Take walks often. Walk after meals or stroll around the neighborhood to see holiday lights.
  • Move while doing chores. Carry groceries, sweep, vacuum, or shovel snow. Every bit counts!

Make fitness social
Stay active while connecting with others. Try these ideas:

  • Plan active traditions. Have a snowball fight, play tag, or take a short walk with family.
  • Move with friends. Host a short workout, dance session, or stretch break before gatherings.
  • Try something new. Sign up for a holiday fun run, go ice skating, or take a winter hike if weather allows.

Stay active while traveling
Busy schedules and travel can make workouts tricky, but small changes help keep you moving.

  • Keep it simple. You don’t need any equipment—you just need yourself!—for moves like squats, push-ups, or planks.
  • Be active during travel breaks. Stretch at rest stops or walk around the airport terminal.
  • Make your goals realistic. You may not be able to do your full usual routine, but even doing 15 minutes of physical activity can help you stay consistent and energized.

Enjoy food mindfully
Food is one of the best parts of the holidays. You don’t have to skip your favorite dishes to stay healthy. You just have to aim for balance.

  • Savor each bite. Eating slowly helps you appreciate and truly enjoy your food, plus makes it easier to notice when you’re full.
  • Pick your favorites. Skip dishes you don’t love so you can fully enjoy the ones you do.
  • Drink water often. Staying hydrated keeps your energy up and helps you feel your best so you can enjoy the festivities.

Choose one healthy habit
Pick one small, regular habit to keep you on track. For example, a 20-minute morning walk, adding a vegetable to each meal, or turning off screens 20 minutes before bed. Even if your schedule is busy, the habit you choose can help you feel centered.

Keep a balanced mindset
The holidays are about connection, not perfection. One missed workout or extra dessert won’t undo your progress. What matters is what you do most of the time. Stay active when you can, eat mindfully, and focus on enjoying the season.
