Keeping your cool at work

Everyone has stressful days at work. Whether you’re dealing with coworkers or customers or handling projects or equipment, you’ll likely have moments that can throw off your focus and test your patience. What matters most is how you handle those moments. Staying calm and focused helps you keep things professional, even when work gets tough.

Try these 7 simple ways to keep your cool at work:

1. Pause before you react. Stop and take a breath before replying or speaking up. This can save you from saying something you might regret.

2. Step away if you need to. Taking a short walk, stretch, or coffee break helps your mind reset so you can think more clearly.

3. Be mindful of your tone of voice. You can’t control how others act, but you can control how you respond. Talk in a calm, steady tone and use respectful words to help keep the situation under control.

4. Focus on solving, not blaming. When something goes wrong, ask “How can we fix this?” instead of “Who messed up?” to keep progress on track.

5. Don’t take it personally. Work stress can bring out strong emotions in others. Remind yourself that their frustration is usually about the situation, not you.

6. Ask for time. It’s okay to say, “Can I think about this and get back to you?” Taking time to gather your thoughts shows maturity, not weakness.

7. Recharge outside of work. Make time for sleep, exercise, hobbies, or activities that energize you. It’s easier to handle stress when you’re rested and recharged.
