Getting healthier is easier together!

New Year’s resolution ideas for the whole family

With 2025 just around the corner, now is a great time to think about how to make it your healthiest year yet. When we team up with others, we’re more likely to stay motivated and work toward our goals. Deciding on resolutions as a family can keep you all on track to stick with your plan and improve your physical, mental, and financial well-being in the new year. Plus it is much more fun when you’re in it together! Here are a few ideas of resolutions you can tackle as a family to help everyone have a happy and healthy 2025.

Cook more together. Making meals at home not only saves money, but is typically much healthier as well. You can enjoy time together planning out the week’s meals, take turns or work as a team to prep each recipe, and sit down as a family to eat and talk about your day. While it can be tough to get started with any new habit, cutting back one to two times a week on takeout or dining out can benefit everyone–definitely a win win!

Get outside. Whether it’s a weekend hike or a walk around the block after dinner, spending time together outside is beneficial for your physical and mental health, not to mention providing yet another opportunity for quality time as a family. Perhaps you aim to do this together two or three times a week to start.

Stay active. If the weather isn’t cooperating enough for you to be active outside, have a backup plan. Perhaps there’s a gym nearby with a basketball court, or a free yoga video online you can all try. Having a plan in advance will make it easier to stick to your resolution to exercise regularly together.

Start or keep hobbies. Do you all enjoy puzzling? Or perhaps there are a few bookworms in your midst. Find something each of all of you enjoy and set aside time regularly to do these things together or even in parallel with each other. Giving time to yourself is a wonderful form of self-care and a great habit to help younger kids learn and develop.

Get involved in the community. Giving back to others is a wonderful resolution to start this year. Brainstorm as a family about what causes mean the most to you, and make a plan to regularly volunteer or work to raise funds for that organization.

Schedule family meetings. The best way to stay accountable and maintain momentum is to meet weekly to check in on how things are going. Especially for younger kids, setting up mini-milestones or trackers to show progress is a great way to stay motivated. Building in small rewards for hitting these will go a long way toward helping everyone achieve their goals and create long-term habits.

Coming up with and working toward resolutions as a family is a great way to kick off 2025 and take the first step toward a happy and healthy new year. Happy holidays!
