How to be merry and mindful

The end of the year is full of activities: parties, errands, traditions, or just the usual busyness of life. Many people feel pressure to do it all, from attending events to wrapping up work and finishing the year perfectly. Whether you celebrate with gatherings or prefer quieter days, this season can feel overwhelming. Practicing mindfulness helps you slow down, reconnect, and enjoy the moments that matter in whatever way works for you.

Why mindfulness matters
Mindfulness can:

  • Lower stress and overwhelm by calming racing thoughts
  • Improve focus so you feel and act intentionally rather than scattered
  • Boost mood by helping you notice small moments of joy
  • Strengthen relationships and deepen self-awareness

Five ways to stay mindful this season
Mindfulness isn’t about adding one more task to your plate. It’s about noticing what’s happening right now and choosing how to respond.

  1. Pause before you commit. Holiday invites or extra projects can pile up. Take a breath and ask, Do I really have the energy for this? Saying no is okay.
  2. Savor moments that matter. Baking, lighting candles, going for a walk, or enjoying a quiet cup of tea helps you focus on sights, smells, and feelings.
  3. Eat with intention. Notice flavors, textures, and aromas. Tune in to your body’s hunger and fullness cues.
  4. Take short breaks. Step outside, stretch, or breathe deeply. Even taking a five-minute break can refresh the mind.
  5. Be present with people, including yourself. Listen to and make eye contact with others, and simply notice your own thoughts. Mindfulness works in both social and solo moments.

Bring more merriment into your days
Being merry and mindful go hand in hand. Slowing down makes joy last longer. Try these simple, actionable steps:

Set your tone every morning. Take a deep breath, set a small intention, and start grounded.

Practice gratitude daily. Notice little pleasures and anchor them by writing or saying them out loud.

Connect deeply with others. Listen fully and put devices to the side.

Move your body joyfully. Dance, walk, or stretch to lift your mood and energy.

Celebrate small wins. Finishing a task, surviving a rough day, or trying something new deserves recognition.

Pause and check in. Observe your thoughts and feelings without judgment.

Be kind to yourself. Feeling merry doesn’t mean never feeling down. Acknowledge your feelings and then gently return to the present.

You deserve days filled with happiness and awareness. Even (and especially) during this busy season, take time to simply pause and pay attention. It just might help your days feel brighter.
