Family-friendly fitness ideas

Summer is the perfect time to get moving as a family. The days are longer, the weather’s warmer, and there’s plenty of fun to be had outside. You don’t need a gym, special gear, or fancy plans – just a little energy and a sense of adventure.

Here’s some fun, easy ways to stay active together this summer:

Take a hike (or a walk!)
Find a nearby trail, nature path, or park and go exploring. Many local trails are free and easy to access. You can use apps or city websites to find hidden gems near you. Bring the dog and turn it into a family adventure!

Explore new parks
Try visiting a different park each weekend. Look for ones with walking loops, open fields, or nature play areas. Pack a frisbee, soccer ball, or just a picnic blanket and go with the flow!

Turn water into a workout
Swimming, water balloon fights, or running through sprinklers are all great ways to cool off and stay active. Even washing the car together can turn into a splash-filled workout!

Play old-school games
Think tag, freeze dance, hopscotch, jump rope, or hide-and-seek. They’re fun, free, and sneak in a lot of movement without it feeling like exercise.

Try backyard fitness challenges
Set up simple obstacle courses using what you already have: draw chalk lines to jump over on the pavement, place cones (or shoes) to weave through, or a run a race from tree to tree.

Make it pet-friendly
Dogs are great fitness buddies! Let them lead the way on walks, play fetch with you, or just follow their nose as you explore a new neighborhood or trail.

Make chores into a game
Yardwork, gardening, or cleaning out the garage can get your heart pumping, especially if you add music, make it a team challenge, or race against the clock.

Set a summer goal
Pick one small goal as a family like trying five new parks, walking 100 miles, or moving together for 30 minutes a day. Use stickers or a chart to mark your progress. Celebrate when you hit your goal!

The key: Keep it fun!
You don’t have to be fast or fit – just moving together matters. Laugh a lot, be flexible, and enjoy the time outside. Summer goes by fast, so soak it up!

Before you head out, review these important summer safety tips:

  • Use sunscreen and reapply it often, especially if you’re swimming or sweating.
  • Plan activities in the morning or evening when it’s cooler. Try to avoid peak heat hours (usually 10 AM to 4 PM).
  • Bring plenty of water and take breaks often – especially necessary for kids, older adults, and pets.
  • Check the rules at parks and trails. Some places have leash laws, dog-free zones, or hours when areas are closed.
  • Be mindful of others when walking, biking, or playing in shared spaces.
